Nichola and I kind of grew up together by proxy as her brother was one of my best mates at school. Despite only being in touch via Facebook after all these years, when I heard her devastating news and then, later, her plans to start a charity to help the children of the fallen I immediately wanted to help.
This country owes a debt of gratitude to the scores of men and women who bravely and selflessly fight to protect the freedom we take for granted. Sadly Lee is not alone and each week we hear the devastating news that more service personnel have been killed whilst serving for the armed forces. What SLS is doing for the heartbroken children they leave behind is incredible and I feel passionately that people should do all they can to support them.
In September 2010 I took part in the Windsor Half Marathon to help raise money and awareness for SLS. I completed the 13 mile course dressed as the SLS mascot complete with a huge foam head!! The pictures really have to be seen to be believed! I was able to raise just over £650 to help get SLS started on their journey and was honoured to run the race wearing boots and clothing lent to me by Lee's friends some of whom were severely injured in Afghanistan themselves.
I feel privileged to have helped SLS, all be it only with a small amount so far. That is not the end for me though; I am committed to helping SLS and am busily planning something bigger and better for 2011 to help SLS achieve their incredible goals.
Many many thanks to Jason and a big well done.
