Network Rail’s Go Karting event raises funds for Scotty’s
Employees from Network Rail organised a Go Karting event, held at Lakeside Karting in Thurrock, Essex, and raised £3,200 for Scotty’s Little Soldiers.
Founded by war widow Nikki Scott in 2010, Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a national charity which supports children across the UK who have lost a parent who served in the British Armed Forces. The charity was set up in memory of Nikki’s husband and father to her two children, Corporal Lee Scott, following his death in Afghanistan in 2009.
This year was the fifth Go Karting event organised by Network Rail at Lakeside Karting and to date the company has raised over £10,000 for Scotty’s Little Soldiers.
Ross Mason, Network Rail’s Property Scheme Project Manager, said: “I saw Nikki Scott on television back in 2012 when she won The Sun Military Awards for her support to armed forces and her story really touched me. When I joined Network Rail I decided to organise a Go Karting event. We’ve done it now for six years. It’s a fantastic event because not only does everyone enjoy it but it gets everyone talking. It’s a great day for a great cause.”
Scotty’s Little Soldiers provides its members with support and guidance throughout their childhood and offers a respite, however brief, from the daily ups and downs of coping with the loss of a parent. It does this through three programmes. ‘Smiles’ offers children the opportunity to smile and laugh again through a wide range of activities and gifts. The ‘Support’ programme aims to assist with the more emotional side of bereavement and includes access to professional counselling and a family support network. The ‘Strides’ programme helps with the charity’s members personal development and includes a range of activity and educational grants.
Charity founder, Nikki Scott said: “We are extremely grateful to Ross and his team at Network Rail for their continued support. It’s fantastic to hear they had a great day Go Karting. Every penny raised makes a difference to us.”
