Banger Rally to the Arctic Circle Raises Money for Scotty’s

A Leicestershire family recently completed a mammoth drive to the Arctic Circle in order to see the Northern Lights and raise over £1,100 for bereaved Armed Forces children’s charity, Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

Dave Clarke (61) was joined by his wife Lorraine (58), daughter Rheanne (26) and her boyfriend Dan Cooke (36) on the Boom Banger Rally this month; a monster expedition which sees participants drive ‘banger’ cars to stunning locations.

Dave, Lorraine, Rheanne and Dan travelled 2,200 miles to the Arctic Circle in a 26-year-old Volvo 850 GLT and a 2003 Honda Civic which were bought for under £900. The cars were decorated to make them stand out, one as Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster and the other with the theme of Cruella Deville from 101 Dalmatians. The drive saw the family take in the stunning sites of Larvik, Innvik, Trondheim, Mo i Rana and Bodø across a five-day period whilst raising money for a good cause.

Founded by war widow Nikki Scott, Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a national charity which provides support to children across the UK who have lost a parent who served in the British Armed Forces. The charity was set up in memory of Nikki’s husband and father to her two children, Corporal Lee Scott, after he was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.

Dan Cooke served in the military for 10 years, operating in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan – his experience meant that when he first came across Scotty’s Little Soldiers on the Boom Banger Rally website the message particularly resonated with him. He was sure that this was the charity to raise money for along with Dave and the Clarke family.

Commenting on their experience and raising money for Scotty’s, Dave said: “I’d recommend the Boom Banger Rally to anyone who wants to see Norway and the Northern Lights. The drive was incredible and luckily our cars held up – we’re enormously proud to have raised over £1,100 for Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

“It felt right for us to raise funds for a smaller charity as we know the money goes a long way. Dan’s experience in the paratroopers meant that Scotty’s Little Soldiers was perfect for us and we proudly donned their t-shirt whilst we were driving some 2,200 miles. It’s incredible what the charity does for children and if we can contribute to that in any way, we’re happy.”

Scotty’s founder Nikki Scott thanked Dave, Dan, Lorraine and Rheanne for their fundraising activity, commenting: “The Boom Banger Rally sounds like an incredibly fun (and challenging) experience! We’re tremendously grateful for the money raised and are happy that there was no major hiccups on the mammoth drive to the Northern Lights. We’ve seen some of the fantastic photos and the cars looked great. Congratulations to them for completing the drive and smashing their fundraising target.”
